Born in Wisconsin, Schuster moved to Los Angeles in 1912 and joined the faculty of Otis Art Institute in 1923. Her early career focused on American Impressionism, but in the late 1920s she began studying with Stanton Macdonald-Wright and transitioned to Cubism and Abstract Expressionism.
